Infinitely Generous
Toymaker and illustrator, Marilyn Scott Waters, has been creating marvelous paper toys and sharing them freely for many years. Today I got word that she's made some of her lovely watercolor art into two pdfs free for the download so that we can all make an Infinity Card.
If you're not familiar with Infinity Cards, they are one of my personal all time favorite paper card mechanisms and are really quite magical to see in person. To make it even sweeter, they are super simple to construct. No kidding. It's just four strips glued at four corners, making a two-sided square, that flips open in panel combination after panel combination.
I've made several of them myself as art pieces, where I've made wording on each panel combine to reveal meaning no matter which way the panels are flipped. I highly recommend trying to make a few to see how fun they can be for yourself. And Marilyn's gift might be an endlessly helpful introduction.
(PS: no pressure, strictly if you're moved to, she's not asking, if you do make one and enjoy it, a small donation to Marilyn's Paypal will help pay for bandwidth so she can continue to provide free toys for children all over the world! Look at the type of things she's been giving, clicking on "toys" shows the rest.)

Forwards or Backwards: Which Way Do You 3D?
images and content © Jayme McGowan
Really exceptional 3-Dimensional Illustrator, Jayme McGowan, gives an interesting interview to 3D Illio showcase site, Working in the 3rd Dimension In it, she describes her process as sketch > cut paper > gluing layers until her illustrations are rich in depth and texture. Conversely, I just read on Robert Sabuda's site from student pop-up designer, Jemma Westing, that she creates her original pop-ups in reverse of that. Jemma starts with white paper to shape what the finished dimensional figure should look like and then... Well, I'll let her describe it:
"When designing a Pop, I work backwards! I have an idea and just start sticking pieces of paper together with masking tape, learning about the constraints of my design as I go. I then start to make the design as efficient as I can-this might be as simple as realizing that the 3 pieces I have stuck together could be cut down to just 1 piece instead. I try to do the same with the glue spots too."Even though each artist has their personal technique preference, I find it interesting to think that each form of 3D paper art has its own directional approach. It wouldn't do to try engineering a pop-up from the specific pieces to the general action, nor would it work well to create a box construction from the general shapes to the specific pieces.
Which way to you 3D?

Coiled Stories:
Helen Musselwhite's charming paper displays
I love the way these charming scenes draw the viewer into them. Bringing us into their enchanting world of storybook layers.
Helen Musselwhite has been in the Forest twice before with posts from my cohorts, but Ulla just featured something new Helen's been doing that I thought you all should see and enjoy.

She's taken her delicate, marvelous, storybook-style paper cuts and coiled them on themselves, making a 360º scene placed under over-sized glass bell jars. It's not only wonderful examples of paper art, but a fresh dimensional way to display paper pieces.

Hi PF Community !
Many thanks to Jaime, who invited me for writing in this great paper art related blog.
Apologize my sometimes incorrect English. I hope you understand in this case all I have to say from the context.
My main interest is related to all mechanical artwork and as a former d&t-teacher I prefer the materials wood and paper . I have a collection of media about it and I'm an author at professional journals and of a book titled "Mechanische Spielobjekte und Automaten", Hugendubel,1987. The whole spectrum of my topics you can see in my german blog "Spiel und Kunst mit Mechanik":
http://kugelbahn.blog.de/ . You will see paper mechanics are only a little part of all. I like to see much comments, so we get a lively exchange of informations.
And here the first contribution.
4 weeks ago was in Paris the "2e Salon du livre animé" . In this blog you can find a lot of photos
with much popupbook artists showing his newest artwork and dummies.
