Big Kiss: My First Original Pop-up Design

Big Kiss
This Paper Pop-up design for a friend's wedding invitation was a HUGE challenge for me. It don't think I've ever worked harder on anything, and that's saying a lot. But the response and satisfaction was so great after doing it, it made it all entirely worthwhile.

bigkiss
Folds flat to mail in a standard A6 envelope, opens to activate the figures moving towards each other for a BIG KISS when meeting at top.

An edition of 100 were made, with full color digital printing, the dieline was created in Illustrator, after developing dozens of paper prototypes, laser cutting was done by Precision Graphic Systems, Inc., hand-assembly was done by myself, my kind husband, and the couple themselves, at our place at what we called in fun a "glue party", removable take-along location direction cards were attached by thumb cuts to the reverse.

The entire action of the kiss happens from the folds on a small strip I called the "driver" that was glued in between the two full color hearts. The colorful illustrations were made in Photoshop with the wonderful, free "Tea Stains" PS brushset by talented Franz Jeitz of Fudgegraphics.

Video sent to the happy couple during the design's development.

German publisher Die Gestalten is coming out with a book that looks to be an impressive papercraft compendium! It comes out in the Fall. Even though it appears a bit pricey, it looks like it might still be a must for paper aficionados.

From the publisher:

"Papercraft is an extensive survey on the insatiable trend of innovative art and design work crafted from paper. It explores the astounding possibilities of paper and gathers the most extraordinary creations – from small objects and figures to large-scale art installations and urban interventions as well as three-dimensional graphic sculptures from a vast spectrum of artistic disciplines ranging from character design, urban art, fine art, graphic design, illustration, fashion, animation and film. The book also includes a DVD with fun DIY printable templates for creating your own paper characters and toys as well as a curated selection of the best stop-motion animations."
